New Delhi: The President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Syed Sadatullah Husaini, has expressed deep concern over recent reports of incidents involving members of the Christian community in various parts of the country. He urged the authorities to take prompt and effective action to ensure peace, security, and communal harmony, particularly in the lead-up to the Christmas festivities.
In a statement issued to the media, Mr. Husaini said Jamaat-e-Islami Hind is seriously concerned about reports of attacks, intimidation, and disruptions faced by sections of the Christian community. He warned that if such incidents remain unaddressed, they could foster anxiety and mistrust among citizens.
“India’s constitutional ethos rests on equality, freedom of religion, and mutual respect. Any situation that undermines these principles requires the nation’s serious attention,” Mr. Husaini stated, reaffirming that JIH stands in solidarity with the Christian community.
The JIH President noted that civil society groups have documented troubling incidents — including the disruption of prayer meetings, disputes over burial grounds, and allegations under anti-conversion laws — that have caused distress to many Christian families. He emphasized that every such matter must be dealt with strictly in accordance with law and due process. “Social harmony is best maintained when institutions act impartially and citizens have confidence in the rule of law,” he added.
Highlighting the need for greater sensitivity during religious festivals, Mr. Husaini called on the administration to ensure that Christmas celebrations take place peacefully, without fear or disturbance. “Festivals are occasions of faith and goodwill. It is the state’s responsibility to create an environment where all communities can observe their religious occasions with dignity and security,” he said.
Underscoring the importance of fair and unbiased law enforcement, the JIH President cautioned against the misuse or selective enforcement of laws, which, he said, could deepen resentment and weaken public trust. “Peaceful worship, charity, and community service should never become causes for conflict. Constructive dialogue and lawful action are key to strengthening social cohesion,” he remarked.
Concluding his statement, Mr. Husaini reiterated: “India’s strength lies in its plural and inclusive character. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind believes that protecting the rights and dignity of every religious community is vital to national unity. We urge all citizens and authorities to work together to uphold peace, mutual respect, and the constitutional values that unite us as a nation.”
