New Delhi, September 21: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing his government of looting lakhs of crores from the people in the name of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Singh said that while the BJP government had once billed GST as a “revolutionary reform” for the Indian economy, it has instead “broken the backs of ordinary Indians” and burdened them with relentless taxes.
The senior AAP leader targeted PM Modi for hyping recent GST cuts after eight years, questioning why the decision took so long and demanding that the government return the money collected from citizens. Singh said, “When GST was introduced in 2017, it was hailed as a second independence for India. But we repeatedly warned it was wrong. The middle class’s backbone was broken. Common people were crushed under its weight. And now, after eight years, Modi suddenly says GST should be reduced — then why loot people for so long?”
“PM enjoys foreign luxuries, yet preaches swadeshi”
Singh also accused the Prime Minister of hypocrisy in his calls for ‘swadeshi’ (self-reliance). He alleged that Modi “flaunts foreign luxuries” such as Swiss watches, German pens, Italian sunglasses, American phones, imported cars, and even foreign helicopters, while urging Indians to shun imports. “Begin with yourself, Prime Minister. Your ‘swadeshi’ lecture becomes hollow when you yourself are surrounded by foreign goods,” Singh remarked.
Criticism over trade with China and farmers’ plight
The AAP MP further slammed the Modi government over India’s trade relations with China despite ongoing border tensions. He alleged that even after the Galwan Valley clash, the government conducted trade worth ₹49 lakh crore with China, which he claimed destroyed Indian traders’ markets. He also highlighted the contradiction in BJP’s shifting stance on boycotting foreign goods.
Referring to farmers, Singh said, “While America has imposed a 50% tariff on us, this government reduced the import duty on cotton to 0%. You have ruined crores of Indian farmers through such policies.
Call for restitution
In a sharp demand, Singh asserted that the government must return “hundreds of thousands of crores” collected from citizens in the form of GST, fuel taxes, and other levies. “You gave away national assets like railways, ports, water projects, and airports to your corporate cronies while ordinary citizens were left to suffer. Stop hollow promises and return the money looted from people if you truly want to build the nation’s future,” he said.
Singh concluded by declaring that the Modi government’s claims of delivering “revolutionary reforms” were nothing but propaganda, and that eight years of heavy taxation had destroyed people’s trust in the government.
