NEW DELHI: A tragic accident in South East Delhi’s Jungpura area has claimed the life of a 37-year-old woman after her son allegedly misfired an illegal weapon. The incident occurred late Monday night in the Valmiki Mandir JJ settlement of Pant Nagar.
The Incident
At approximately 10:39 PM on February 9, authorities at PS Lajpat Nagar received a call from Moolchand Hospital reporting that a woman, identified as Mrs. Sumati, had been brought in dead with a gunshot wound to the face.
Preliminary investigations by the Hazrat Nizamuddin Police revealed that the shooting took place at the victim’s residence. Sumati, who worked as a domestic helper to support her family, is survived by her husband, Chotu, and three children.
Arrest and Investigation
Police quickly identified the victim’s 18-year-old son, Tarun, as the individual responsible. According to officials, Tarun had recently procured an illegal country-made pistol from a contact in the Ashram area.
While allegedly “demonstrating” the firearm to his mother, the weapon discharged accidentally. Following the shooting, Tarun fled the scene and discarded the weapon in a nearby drain. However, police apprehended him shortly after, and the firearm has since been recovered.
Legal Proceedings
The Delhi Police Crime Team visited the scene of the crime to collect forensic evidence. The following legal actions have been initiated:
- FIR Registered: Case FIR No. 42/2026 has been filed at PS Hazrat Nizamuddin.
- Charges: The accused faces charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Sections 25, 27, and 54 of the Arms Act.
- Ongoing Search: Police are currently conducting raids to track down and arrest the individual who supplied the illegal firearm.
