NEW DELHI: June 18, 2026: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has achieved a historic milestone in higher education, leaping more than 75 places to secure the 686th global position in the newly released QS World University Rankings 2027. This stellar performance firmly places the institution among the top 20 universities in India.

Following the announcement, JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi extended their heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the entire university fraternity for this remarkable achievement.

A Steady Upward Trajectory

JMI’s latest ranking highlights a consistent, year-on-year rise in its international standing. The university’s climb over the last four evaluation cycles showcases its accelerating growth:

  • 2024: #951–1000
  • 2025: #851–900
  • 2026: #761–770
  • 2027: #686 (Highest Ever)

Key Drivers of Growth

This year’s significant jump was primarily fueled by sharp improvements in JMI’s research impact and its rising reputation among international employers and academics. The university saw substantial gains across multiple key metrics, including:

  • An increased overall score of 25.9.
  • Stronger research impact via higher citation rates.
  • Growth in international student enrollment.
  • Enhanced graduate employability outcomes.
  • An expanded volume of interdisciplinary research.

Leadership Reflections

“JMI’s standing among the world’s top institutions is a testament to our comprehensive excellence across the key indicators calibrated by the QS rankings,” said Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif. “I extend my heartiest commendations to our faculty members, researchers, scientists, and students. Their high-quality, scholarly contributions have pushed JMI to its highest rank to date. We will continue to work harder to build on this momentum in the coming years.”

Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi attributed the achievement to the collective dedication of both teaching and non-teaching staff.

“Our rise to the 686th spot globally demonstrates JMI’s increasingly cutting-edge research, high academic standing, and growing global influence,” Prof. Rizvi noted. “It is a matter of tremendous satisfaction to be ranked 20th nationally. I also take this opportunity to convey our deep gratitude to the Government of India, especially the Ministry of Education, for their unwavering support.”

Driving Quality Assurance

University leadership also highly commended the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), led by Director Prof. Rafat Parveen, and her team for their year-round efforts in maintaining JMI’s competitive edge across major national and international rankings.

Prof. Parveen added that the achievement perfectly reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to innovation, global engagement, and academic excellence.
