The president of one of India’s largest Islamic organisations has condemned joint US-Israeli military strikes on Iran, warning they could trigger a “wider regional war”.
New Delhi: Syed Sadatullah Husaini, head of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), described the strikes as a “grave violation of national sovereignty” and called for an immediate return to diplomatic dialogue.
The statement follows reports of explosions in Tehran and other parts of the country. Mr Husaini expressed “deep concern” over the disruption to civilian life and the potential for a humanitarian catastrophe across West Asia.
‘Diplomacy, not missiles’
In a statement released from New Delhi, the JIH leader argued that long-standing disputes regarding nuclear programmes and security should not be settled through military force.
“The path of aggression undermines international law and weakens the authority of global institutions tasked with maintaining peace,” Mr Husaini said.
He accused the United States of backing military action instead of encouraging negotiations, suggesting that the current pattern of confrontation is destabilising the entire region.
Call for Indian intervention
The JIH president also called on the Indian government to adopt an “independent and principled stand” based on its history of non-alignment.
The organisation urged New Delhi to:
- Press for restraint: Use global forums to advocate for a ceasefire.
- Promote international law: Encourage respect for national borders.
- Support de-escalation: Lead efforts to prevent the crisis from spiralling into a broader conflict.
Regional stability
Mr Husaini further appealed to Muslim-majority countries to act with “wisdom and responsibility” to avoid a total breakdown of order in the region.
He concluded that lasting peace in West Asia would only be achieved through “justice and mutual respect” rather than “military coercion.”
The strikes come at a time of heightened tension in the region, with the international community divided over the best path toward long-term stability.
