New Delhi, January 12, 2026: On National Youth Day marking the 164th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI)’s Games & Sports Department organized “Run for Swadeshi” at the university’s Cricket Ground, Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Sports Complex. The event aimed to raise awareness among students and youth about the importance of Swadeshi and self-reliance. JMI Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi flagged off the run this morning.
Prof. Asif, highlighting Swami Vivekananda’s moral and social philosophy, said, “Swami Vivekananda’s teachings inspire all humanity. He instilled national pride in Indians. The ‘Run for Swadeshi’ seeks to sensitize staff, students, and youth to the timeless values of Swadeshi, Atmanirbhar Bharat, physical fitness, discipline, and teamwork. His teachings awaken national unity, fostering collective responsibility and community engagement.”
Registrar Prof. Rizvi emphasized Swadeshi’s role in achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat. He added, “Swami Vivekananda was a visionary philosopher, teacher, and modern Indian thinker ahead of his time. If today’s youth embrace his ideals of universal good, collective efforts, personal growth, and focused mind, they will achieve great goals. India’s youthful potential will be realized by committing to his nationalist ideals on truth, social harmony, selfless service, and yoga.”
Prof. Nafis Ahmad, Honorary Director (Games & Sports), JMI, briefed on the initiative and praised participants. He said, “Everything is easy when busy, but nothing when lazy.” The run promotes youth empowerment, healthy lifestyles, sustainable living, and campus engagement.
Participants included Chief Proctor Mohd. Asad Malik, Security Advisor Syed Abdul Rashid, Dr. Mohammad Abid (Deputy Director, Games & Sports), Dr. Mohd. Arshad Khan (Principal, Jamia Sr. Secondary School), NSS Coordinator Viqar Husain Siddiqui, Lt. (Dr.) Anwara Hashmi (ANO NCC), staff, NCC & NSS units, and over 150 students, faculty, and staff.
Swami Vivekananda, born Narendranath Dutta on January 12, 1863, in Calcutta, has his birth anniversary celebrated as National Youth Day.
