New Delhi, September 3, 2025: The Games & Sports Department of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) celebrated National Sports Day (NSD)-2025 from 29th to 31st August 2025 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary “Wizard of Hockey.”
This year’s observance was held under the theme of building a healthy, inclusive, and active India through sports, with the tagline:
“Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein.”
As part of the three-day celebration, several events and activities were organized for university staff and students.
On 31st August 2025, JMI hosted a special event titled “Sunday on Cycle” for teaching and non-teaching staff. The cycling rally, led by Prof. Mazhar Asif, Vice-Chancellor of JMI, began at 7:00 a.m. from the Centenary Gate (Gate No.13), covering a route through the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Engineering & Technology before circling back. Participants cycled for about half an hour, raising the slogan:
“Major Dhyan Chand Ji ki Yaad Mein, Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein.”
Prof. Asif highlighted the inspirational legacy of Major Dhyan Chand and urged the university community to adopt a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing the need for regular sports and fitness activities to fight lifestyle-related health issues such as obesity.

Supporting the initiative, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi (Registrar, JMI) praised the continuous efforts of the Games & Sports Department in promoting sports and fitness culture at the university. He underlined the role of daily exercise in maintaining good health.
Prof. Nafis Ahmad, Honorary Director of Games & Sports, JMI, presented a brief report on the celebrations, encouraging staff to ensure a balanced work-life routine and sustainable living through fitness and sports.
Earlier celebrations included Volleyball and Cricket Tournaments for teaching and non-teaching staff on 29th and 30th August 2025. On 29th August, the university also launched the Major Dhyan Chand Inter-School Hockey Tournament for Jamia School students. An Orientation Programme for school sports students was organized at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Jamia Senior Secondary School, featuring a lecture on the Fit India Mission, delivered by the Honorary Director of Games & Sports.
