The Uttar Pradesh government has moved to withdraw all criminal charges, including murder, against ten men accused in the 2015 Dadri lynching case that shocked the nation.
According to Muslimmirror On October 15, the state government filed an application before the Upper Sessions Court in Gautam Buddha Nagar seeking withdrawal of charges under IPC sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult), and 506 (criminal intimidation)—now covered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused include Vishal Rana, son of local BJP leader Sanjay Rana.
The Incident
On September 28, 2015, a mob attacked 52-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq and his 22-year-old son Danish in Bisahda village over rumors of cow slaughter and beef storage. The father and son were dragged from their home and brutally assaulted with bricks, sticks, and knives. Akhlaq succumbed to severe head and chest injuries while Danish survived critical wounds. The attackers also attempted to assault female family members, including Akhlaq’s elderly mother.
In his final moments, Akhlaq called his childhood friend Manoj Sisodia: “Manoj, we are in danger. Please call the police.” Sisodia immediately alerted authorities and reached the scene within 15 minutes, but it was too late to save his friend.
National Outrage and Aftermath
The lynching sparked nationwide ‘Not In My Name’ protests against rising mob violence. Police initially arrested 18 villagers, but all secured bail shortly after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government came to power in 2017.
The withdrawal application, filed by the assistant district counsel following an August 26 directive from the state government, has triggered fresh controversy. Critics argue the move grants impunity for communal violence and undermines justice in one of India’s most notorious hate crimes.
