AISA alleges police brutality and illegal detention; demands the suspension of Delhi Police Commissioner.
Delhi: Twenty students from Jamia Millia Islamia, including two minors, were detained by the Delhi Police at the Nizamuddin roundabout on July 22 while heading to join a protest at Jantar Mantar.
According to student representatives, around 15 to 20 students were intercepted near Hazrat Nizamuddin around 4:00 PM purely on suspicion of participating in the demonstration. They were subsequently held for four hours before being released from the Badarpur police station.
Eyewitnesses and representatives from the All India Students’ Association (AISA) alleged that the police used excessive force during the operation.
“Police attacked the students, injuring several, before forcing them into a bus and transporting them to Badarpur—far away from their residences,” a student told AISA.
Reports indicate that during the detention, police officers dragged one student by his neck and arm, causing him to fall to the ground. The student sustained minor bruises and injuries in the incident.
AISA strongly condemned the police action, calling it a “frenzy of repression and violence unleashing on the people of Delhi.” The student organization has demanded the immediate suspension of the Delhi Police Commissioner.
