Hamdard University Hosts Insightful Lecture on Sufism’s Role in Medieval India

New Delhi, November 4, 2025: Acclaimed historian Syed Ubaidur Rahman delivered a detailed and insightful talk titled ‘The Sufi Tapestry: Interweaving Society, Culture, and Politics in Medieval India’ at Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi. The event was organized by the Centre of Sufi Studies under the Department of Islamic Studies and held at the university’s main Convention Centre.

Presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof Afshar Alam, the lecture attracted a large audience comprising faculty members, students, and academics from various universities throughout the capital.

Syed Ubaid ur Rehman traced the early arrival of Sufis in different parts of India, emphasizing that their presence predated the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate and Muslim rule by centuries. He highlighted the enduring impact of figures such as Nathar Wali Shah in Tamil Nadu and Mir Hamdan in Kashmir, whose spiritual and social influences remain significant even today.

The talk further explored the profound influence of Sufism on the Mughal rulers, including Emperor Akbar, Shahjahan, Dara Shikoh, Jahan Ara, and Zebun Nisa, focusing on their close associations with Sufi saints. Renowned for fostering a more humane and benevolent governance, the Sufi ethos, according to Rehman, imbued Mughal rule with greater cultural vibrancy and tolerance.

Jamia Hamdard, founded in 1963 as Hamdard Tibbi College, continues to be a leading center for Islamic and Sufi studies through its dedicated departments and academic.
