New Delhi, January 13, 2026: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has championed the upliftment, empowerment, and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities since the 1980s. Through its unwavering academic commitment and inclusive approach, the university has become a key national institution advancing the mainstreaming of persons with disabilities via education, training, and rehabilitation.
The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) has granted exceptional recognition to JMI’s disability-related programs in the Department of Teacher Training and Non-Formal Education (DTTNFE) and the Department of Psychology. These programs stand out for their quality, depth, professional relevance, and social impact.
The departments currently offer these flagship special education programs:
- B.Ed. Special Education (Learning Disability)
- B.Ed. Special Education (Visual Impairment)
- M.Ed. Special Education (Learning Disability)
- M.Ed. Special Education (Visual Impairment)
- Advanced Diploma in Childhood Guidance and Counselling
These initiatives have trained qualified special educators and professionals to support diverse disability groups in educational and rehabilitation settings.
This accolade is especially notable, as the RCI has extended approvals beyond standard terms. DTTNFE programs, previously approved for five years, now receive the maximum seven-year term. Similarly, Psychology Department programs, once limited to three years, have gained an additional four years—totaling seven years without renewal. The RCI also approved refunds of JMI’s processing and approval fees, signaling strong confidence in the university’s academic standards and performance.
Under Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif’s leadership, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved establishing a Department of Disability Studies, further bolstering JMI’s disability education efforts. “This Centre of Excellence status marks a milestone in institutionalizing disability-focused education, research, and training at JMI. It will empower and rehabilitate persons with disabilities—a cause close to our hearts,” Prof. Asif said.
JMI Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, who facilitated key meetings and administrative steps for the new department, added: “The faculty’s outstanding commitment made this possible. I am confident the Department of Disability Studies will excel in this vital field of teaching and training.”
Prof. Asif congratulated faculty from DTTNFE, Psychology, and the wider university community, wishing them continued success. Prof. Rizvi echoed the praise and pledged full support to position JMI as a top destination for disability education and training.
Coordinated by Dr. Mohd. Faijullah Khan, the Advanced Diploma and special education programs have been pivotal. Dr. Khan noted: “This recognition reaffirms JMI’s dedication to inclusive disability education and high-quality professional training.”
Building on this milestone, JMI plans to expand offerings, create more opportunities, and launch new programs for the education, empowerment, and holistic development of persons with disabilities.
