New Delhi, September 1, 2025: The Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies (SNCWS) at Jamia Millia Islamia hosted a highly engaging online lecture on August 31, 2025, featuring renowned scholar Professor Inderpal Grewal. The event, titled “Transgressive Love as an Example of Historical Pluralism in South Asia,” drew a diverse audience of researchers, academics, and students from various institutions and disciplines.
Dr. Amina Hussain opened the session with introductory remarks, followed by a welcome address from Prof. Nishat Zaidi, Honorary Director of SNCWS, who highlighted the significance of exploring postmodern ideas of solidarity within feminist scholarship. The session was skillfully moderated by PhD scholar Preeti Maurya.

In her lecture, Prof. Grewal traced the transnational histories of plural societies, focusing on the movement of people and ideas across geographical boundaries. She drew on premodern love stories—notably Heer-Ranjha—to illustrate how such narratives recall a time of cultural and social plurality that predated modern borders and nation-states. Her analysis suggested that these stories could inspire new forms of transnational solidarity in today’s world.
A lively question-and-answer session followed, with participants raising issues such as queer relationships, feminism in conflict zones, and the evolution of women’s solidarity in the present day. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Arushi Poddar, an MA scholar at SNCWS, marking the end of an intellectually stimulating and well-received lecture.
