JIH Raises Alarm Over India-US Tariff Deal, Budget Shortfalls, and Rising Hate Crimes

Date:

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) criticizes the lack of transparency in the India-US trade deal and highlights the rise in hate speech events in 2025.

NEW DELHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has issued a stern critique of the Indian government’s recent policy shifts, specifically targeting the lack of transparency in the India-US tariff arrangement, the “exclusionary” nature of the Union Budget 2026–27, and the surge in communal and caste-based violence.

Concerns Over India-US Trade Transparency

Addressing the media, Syed Sadatullah Husaini, President of JIH, questioned the secrecy surrounding the reported trade deal with the United States. He noted that while Parliament is in session, details are emerging via American officials and social media rather than official government disclosures.

“Public statements from the US suggest India may reduce tariffs on American goods to 0%, while the US imposes 18% on Indian exports,” Husaini stated. He warned that opening the agriculture sector to such lopsided competition could devastate farmers’ livelihoods and compromise national food security. JIH also called for clarity on India’s Russian oil procurement, citing a lack of official confirmation or denial regarding international pressure.

Union Budget 2026-27: Growth vs. Inequality

While the government highlighted a record capital expenditure of over ₹12.2 lakh crore, JIH argues the Budget fails the common citizen.

  • Employment Gap: CAPEX-heavy budgets have limited immediate impact on informal workers, rural households, and youth.
  • Social Spending: Health and education allocations remain well below national policy goals.
  • Debt Burden: Rising dependence on borrowing, with interest payments consuming a massive share of the expenditure, is “crowding out” essential welfare spending.

“Economic growth without investment in human development and social justice is neither inclusive nor sustainable,” Husaini remarked.

Escalating Communal and Caste-Based Violence

JIH Vice-President Malik Moatasim Khan presented a sobering look at India’s internal security and social harmony. Citing data from the previous year, he highlighted:

Category2025 Statistics
Total Hate Speech Events1,318
Targeted at Muslims98%
Caste-Based AtrocitiesMultiple cases reported nationwide

Khan specifically pointed to a recent incident in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand, where youth attempting to protect a Muslim trader from a mob were reportedly booked by police instead of the attackers. He characterized this as a “mockery of law and order” and called for immediate legal reforms to protect marginalized communities and preserve India’s democratic fabric.
