New Delhi | February 17, 2026: The Placement Cell (2025–26) of the Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), recently hosted an insightful lecture titled “Diverse Career Opportunities in Islamic Studies: A Reappraisal in the Light of Contemporary Demands.” The event aimed to bridge the gap between traditional academic study and the evolving requirements of the modern job market.
Bridging the Gap: Skills Beyond the Degree
The keynote speaker, Md Irshad Alam—Founder of Hamari Sada Trust, Sada Times, and Novagen Edge Pvt. Ltd.—challenged the misconception that career paths for Islamic Studies students are limited.
“There is no dearth of opportunities; rather, what is required is clarity of direction, effective planning, and consistent hard work,” Alam stated. He urged students to look beyond their degrees and proactively prepare for competitive examinations at the state and central levels. He emphasized that combining academic knowledge with professional skills is essential to becoming productive, responsible citizens.
A Vision for the Future
Presiding over the session, Professor Iqtedar Mohd Khan, Head of the Department and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Languages, highlighted the importance of critical thinking.
“A student of Islamic Studies should hold the history of religion in one hand and a contemporary academic degree in the other. This duality is the key to success in both religious and worldly spheres.”
Professor Syed Shahid Ali, former Head of the Department, added that intellectual growth begins with the “spirit of inquiry,” noting that asking the right questions is the first step toward professional awareness and avoiding the pitfalls of ignorance.
Key Takeaways from the Seminar:
- Strategic Planning: Success is built on the four pillars of faith, sincerity, hard work, and planning.
- Diverse Avenues: While opportunities may seem niche, the field offers vast potential in research, civil services, and social entrepreneurship.
- Skill Acquisition: Students are encouraged to develop contemporary professional skills alongside their core curriculum.
