Dr. Jitendra Singh Inaugurates 6th Asian Conference on Geography at Jamia Millia Islamia

New Delhi, November 7, 2025: Union Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, inaugurated the 6th Asian Conference on Geography (ACG-2025) at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). The event, hosted by the Department of Geography, JMI in collaboration with the Asian Geographical Association (AGA), is being held from November 6–8, 2025, on the theme “Climate Change, Urbanization, and Sustainable Resource Management in Asian Countries.” This marks the first time the prestigious conference is being organized in India.

The inaugural session at Ansari Auditorium was graced by distinguished guests including Prof. D. P. Singh, former UGC Chairman; Prof. Mazhar Asif, Vice Chancellor, JMI; and Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar, JMI. Leading international scholars such as Prof. Yuji Murayama (Japan), Prof. Kenta Yamamoto (Japan), and Ms. Xuanzi Zhang (China) also attended. Faculty members, researchers, and students from the Department of Geography participated in large numbers.

In his keynote address, Dr. Jitendra Singh commended JMI for hosting the conference during its 105th Foundation Day celebrations, calling it “a timely dialogue” on challenges of global significance. Highlighting that over 750 million Asians face risks from climate-induced hazards, he cited Delhi, Dhaka, Bangkok, and Manila as some of the world’s most vulnerable megacities by 2050. He emphasized India’s growing leadership in balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referencing flagship initiatives including NAPCCSmart Cities MissionAMRUT, and Swachh Bharat Mission. He further urged for greater public participation and creative digital outreach to build awareness on sustainability.

Prof. Mazhar Asif, Vice Chancellor, described the conference as “transformative” and urged moderation in resource use, while Prof. Rizvi, Registrar, highlighted JMI’s third rank in the NIRF 2025 SDG category, reflecting the university’s commitment to sustainable development.

Guest of Honour Prof. D. P. Singh stressed the urgency of adopting renewable energy and eco-friendly urban planning across Asia. International delegates reaffirmed the region’s role as both a hotspot of vulnerability and a cradle of resilience in the global climate conversation.

ACG-2025 features 16 sub-themes focusing on critical topics such as resource sustainability, disaster mitigation, climate change adaptation, and geospatial solutions for climate management. The conference has drawn 409 registered participants, including 53 foreign delegates from countries like Japan, China, the UK, Thailand, South Korea, and Russia. Representatives from leading Indian universities and institutes including JNU, DU, AMU, BHU, IITs, and TISS are also in attendance.

Over 36 parallel sessions and 20 lead lectures will be held, providing a collaborative platform for dialogue, research exchange, and actionable policy outcomes aimed at advancing sustainable development in Asia.
