Jamia Millia Islamia Hosts International Conference on “Qur’an and Science”

Date:

New Delhi | January 29, 2026: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), in collaboration with the Wilayat Foundation and Shahid Beheshti University (Tehran), inaugurated a prestigious three-day international conference titled “Qur’an and Science” on January 28, 2026. The event, held at the Dr. M.A. Ansari Auditorium, has drawn distinguished scholars from India, Iran, Indonesia, Europe, and Kuwait to explore the intersection of divine revelation and scientific inquiry.

Inaugural Highlights: A Call for Intellectual Awakening

The conference was inaugurated by JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi.

In his presidential address, Prof. Asif emphasized that the Qur’an must be viewed as a living guide rather than a book solely for ritual recitation.

“The tragedy is that the Qur’an, which once served as a transformative force for nations, has today been reduced to a book recited only for the dead,” Prof. Asif remarked. “The need of the hour is to internalize it as the pulse of our individual and collective lives.”

Key Perspectives on Science and Faith

The inaugural session featured a series of addresses from global academic and diplomatic leaders:

  • Scientific Realities: Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi noted that the Qur’an directs humanity toward the laws of physics and biology—citing verses on the origin of life from water, the expansion of the universe, and the separation of salt and fresh waters.
  • The Pursuit of Knowledge: Prof. Syed Shahid Ali highlighted that the first revelation, “Read in the name of your Lord,” establishes the pursuit of knowledge as a sacred act of worship.
  • A Unified Source: Prof. Akhtarul Wasey observed that both scripture and science guide humanity toward the same “Ultimate Truth,” with the Qur’an providing the principles and science providing the means of interpretation.
  • Intellectual Security: Prof. Dr. Jamileh Sadat Alamolhoda (Former First Lady of Iran) urged the youth to strengthen their bond with the Qur’an to achieve intellectual security in a complex modern world.

Global Contributions

The conference benefited from diverse insights across the Islamic world:

  • Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad Naqvi argued that science should be understood through the lens of the Qur’an rather than the reverse.
  • Ambassador Mohammad Fathali (Iran) and Engineer Mustafa Abbas (Kuwait) both stressed the importance of deep contemplation ($Tadabbur$) to unlock the mysteries of the universe.
  • Prof. Aslam Parvez focused on the social ethics of the Qur’an, linking faith to the practical welfare of society.

Event Details and Conclusion

The program opened with a recitation by Dr. Mohammad Munawwar Kamal and was moderated by Mr. Junaid Haris and Dr. Mehdi Baqir. The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Mohammad Mushtak.

The three-day event will culminate in a valedictory session on January 30, 2026, at 10:00 AM in the CIT Conference Hall, JMI.
