New Delhi, November 14, 2025: Addressing the increasing demand for trained counsellors and guidance professionals, the Department of Psychology at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has launched a two-semester Advanced Diploma in Child Guidance and Counselling, accredited by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). The programme was inaugurated yesterday, marked by an Orientation Programme for newly admitted students.
The initiative was made possible through the strong support and leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif, whose vision was instrumental in the development of this programme. Equally pivotal was the guidance provided by JMI Registrar, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, who played a key role throughout the process.
During the inauguration, Prof. Rizvi applauded the dedication of the Department in securing the rigorous RCI accreditation and organizing the orientation. He emphasized the importance of faith as an element of mental health, noting that belief in a higher power can help alleviate anxiety and stress. Prof. Rizvi also congratulated Prof. Samina Bano, Head of the Department, and Prof. Sheema Aleem, Diploma Coordinator, for their committed efforts, assuring the administration’s full support.
Prof. Mohd. Muslim Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, shared a concise and inspiring overview of Jamia’s rich legacy and extended his best wishes for the success of the new diploma.
Prof. Samina Bano warmly welcomed the incoming students and, along with Prof. Sheema Aleem, expressed deep gratitude to the Vice Chancellor and Registrar for their steadfast support. They also acknowledged the contributions of Prof. Bharti Sharma, Course Coordinator; Dr. Faizullah Khan; and Mr. Prateek Kumar, Programme Officer (RCI), for their assistance during the accreditation process.
Prof. Bano expressed confidence that the students would serve as exemplary ambassadors of both the university and the new programme. Prof. Aleem highlighted that this diploma stands out among central universities in India, aiming to produce skilled counsellors while reinforcing professional standards in the field.
The Orientation Programme featured sessions by esteemed resource persons, including Dr. Vandana Thapar (former Joint Director, NIPCCD); Prof. Rekha Sharma Sen (IGNOU); Prof. Zubair Meenai (JMI); Dr. Jagriti Singh (AIIMS); Dr. Rahul Chandok (Artemis Hospitals); and Prof. Bilal Ahmed (Society for Promotion of Youth & Masses, Delhi). They led insightful discussions on topics such as child development, child protection, the needs of special children, child mental health and disorders, and substance abuse. The sessions were met with enthusiasm from new students, who expressed pride in joining the programme and committed themselves to upholding the highest standards of excellence and ethics in both the university and the counselling profession.
