Attempt to Throw Shoe at Dalit CJI B.R. Gavai Condemned as Assault on India’s Soul, Judiciary: AAP

Date:

New Delhi: A 71-year-old advocate allegedly threw a shoe at Chief Justice of India B R Gavai Monday morning inside the Supreme Court. The Delhi Police reached the Supreme Court, and said further investigations are ongoing.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has strongly condemned the attempted shoe-throwing at Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai inside the Supreme Court, calling it not just an attack on one judge but an assault on the very soul of India and the country’s judiciary. AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal emphasized that the incident reflects the intolerance of those who cannot accept a Dalit individual reaching the highest judicial position through hard work and honesty.

Kejriwal expressed on social media that the audacity of the assailant’s supporters, who openly threaten the CJI on social platforms, showcases a dangerous political and lawlessness trend that the nation will not tolerate. He stressed that this is not merely a personal attack but a direct affront to the judiciary and India’s core values.

Saurabh Bharadwaj, AAP Delhi unit president, strongly criticized the attempt by a lawyer to attack the Dalit CJI and highlighted the disturbing social media reaction glorifying the assailant while vilifying the CJI. Bharadwaj remarked that many seem disturbed by the fact that a Dalit holds such an eminent position and expressed outrage at the hypocrisy of those who criticize the Dalit CJI for wearing good shoes while celebrating historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin.

He warned of the growing threat posed by right-wing troll networks protected by the central government, which encourage humiliation and threats against Dalits and other marginalized communities. Bharadwaj pointed out that attacks have targeted Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, and now Dalits, revealing attempts to undermine the social fabric with a deeply Manuwadi mindset unwilling to accept social equality.

Highlighting the double standards of the ruling party, Bharadwaj called out the silence over attacks on other leaders compared to the glorification of violence against the Chief Justice, exposing the ruling establishment’s selective outrage. He urged the judiciary and citizens to speak out strongly against the growing menace of goondagardi (goon-like behavior), online threats, and divisive politics that endanger India’s democracy and social harmony.

This condemnation by AAP underscores the urgent need for protecting the dignity of constitutional positions, condemning hate, and preserving the integrity of India’s judiciary amid rising intolerance and political polarization.
