New Delhi: The National Federation of Youth Movement (NFYM) strongly condemns the recent incident involving Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, in which he was seen pulling the niqab of a Muslim woman.
In a statement issued to the media, NFYM Chairman Masihuzzama Ansari said the act was not only unfortunate but also a grave assault on a woman’s dignity and self-respect. He demanded that the National Commission for Women immediately take cognizance of the matter and issue a notice to the Chief Minister.
Mr. Ansari stated that individuals holding constitutional positions are expected to uphold dignity, sensitivity, and responsible conduct. He said such incidents run contrary to democratic values, constitutional propriety, and social decorum.
Responding to claims that the Chief Minister may be mentally unwell, the NFYM Chairman added that if such claims are true, he should refrain from holding a constitutional post or attending public events. He stressed that mental illness cannot, under any circumstances, serve as justification for inappropriate behavior.
The NFYM urged the National Commission for Women to recognize this incident as an attack on a woman’s dignity and identity, take its seriousness into account, and ensure prompt and unbiased action. The organization reaffirmed that it would not accept any compromise when it comes to the respect, dignity, and rights of women.
NFYM further emphasized that, in recent years, incidents targeting Muslims, other minority communities, and marginalized groups have become alarmingly frequent — particularly those involving women and children in educational institutions and public spaces. This growing trend is a matter of grave concern.
The statement also noted that in many such cases, the argument of mental instability is repeatedly used to shield the accused from accountability. NFYM warned that this practice undermines both the justice system and the principles of democracy.
It stated that if a person is genuinely mentally unfit, they must not be allowed to hold public or constitutional office, as it is neither appropriate nor acceptable for an unstable individual to discharge public responsibilities.
NFYM recalled other instances, such as the lenient treatment of the accused in the “Sulli Deals” and “Bulli Bai” apps cases — where Muslim women were subjected to online “auctions” — and the 31 July 2023 incident in which an RPF constable killed three Muslims on a train traveling from Jaipur to Mumbai, later citing mental illness as a defense.
The organization concluded that such incidents should not be dismissed as isolated acts but seen as matters of social and institutional accountability. It called for strict legal action, without discrimination, against all those found guilty.
