JAMMU: In a major success for anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces neutralized two terrorists, including a top Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) commander, during an encounter in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district on Sunday.
Joint Operation in Chatroo: Key Details
The operation was triggered by specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the region. A joint team consisting of the Jammu & Kashmir Police, Indian Army, and the elite 2 Para launched a targeted cordon-and-search operation.
As the forces closed in, the trapped terrorists opened fire, leading to a fierce gunfight. During the exchange, both terrorists were eliminated. One of the deceased is confirmed to be a senior JeM commander who had a history of evading security cordons on several previous occasions.
Indian Army Recovers AK-47 Rifles and War-Like Stores
The Indian Army’s White Knight Corps confirmed the neutralization through an official statement on X (formerly Twitter). The military highlighted the “tactical precision” and “seamless synergy” between the Army, CRPF, and J&K Police.
Items recovered from the encounter site include:
- Two (2) AK-47 assault rifles.
- Significant quantities of ammunition.
- Other “war-like stores” intended for terror activities.
“Displaying tactical precision and resolute aggression, troops dominated the encounter site… Two terrorists have been successfully neutralised,” the White Knight Corps stated.
Search Operation Continues in Kishtwar
While the primary targets have been neutralized, a massive search operation remains active in the Chatroo forests. Security forces are sanitizing the area to ensure no remaining threats or hidden caches are left behind.
Why This Matters
The elimination of this specific JeM commander is viewed as a significant setback for terror outfits operating in the Chenab Valley. His ability to evade capture in the past had made him a priority target for regional security forces.
