New Delhi, October 6, 2025: The Centre for West Asian Studies (CWAS) at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (NMCPCR), today inaugurated its highly anticipated capacity building programme titled, “Methodological Innovation, Cultural Studies, and Epistemic Justice in Social Science Research.” The two-week programme, sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), commenced at the India Arab Cultural Centre’s Conference Hall within the university.
The event began with a welcome address and an introduction to the theme by Prof. H. A. Nazmi, Course Director and CWAS faculty, who outlined the programme’s objectives. Prof. Nazmi revealed that an overwhelming 742 applications were received from across India, with 30 scholars selected from diverse states including Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
Delivering the Guest of Honour address, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar of JMI, emphasized the significance of such initiatives for early-career researchers and faculty. He highlighted the need to enhance research skills, align course curricula with the needs of students and policymakers, and integrate the Indian Knowledge System within academic research. Prof. Rizvi urged participants to adopt a critical, ethical, and culturally informed approach to research to contribute meaningfully and originally to their fields.
In his Presidential address, Prof. Mazhar Asif, Vice Chancellor of JMI, welcomed the participants warmly and underscored the essential role of Capacity Building Programmes in nurturing the academic and research capabilities of faculty. He encouraged young scholars to focus on research that benefits society and humanity, while maintaining originality and integrity. Prof. Asif wished the participants a productive and enriching experience and stressed the importance of socially relevant and transformative research.
The inauguration concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Abuzar Kairi, Honorary Director of NMCPCR, who expressed gratitude towards the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, ICSSR, university deans, directors, department heads, participants, faculty, and staff involved. Special appreciation was extended to Dr. Afshan Khan and Dr. Ghazzala Shaban for their exemplary efforts in organizing the event.
The ICSSR-sponsored Capacity Building Programme is designed to promote research excellence among early-career academics nationwide, providing a platform for academic exchange, rigorous training in methodology, and scholarly dialogue.
