New Delhi, November 11, 2025: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has secured a grant of ₹14.8 crore from the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India, under the Prime Minister’s Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK). The funding will be utilized to set up two cutting-edge facilities on the university campus — a Research Lab for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and a Cyber Security Training Lab.
Of the total grant, ₹9.05 crore has been allocated for the establishment of the Research Lab for Electric Vehicles, led by Prof. Ahteshamul Haque from the Department of Electrical Engineering, JMI. The remaining ₹5.75 crore will fund the Cyber Security Training Lab, headed by Dr. Shane Kazim Naqvi, Director of the FTK-Centre for Information Technology (CIT), JMI.
The initiative aims to strengthen India’s technological self-reliance in electric mobility and cyber security — two critical sectors driving the country’s innovation and national security goals.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif emphasized the project’s national significance, stating, “These two initiatives will play a crucial role in advancing India’s mission of developing indigenous expertise in electric vehicles and cyber security. The labs will offer JMI students and researchers direct exposure to emerging technologies, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to both sectors.” He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Minority Affairs for its support in making this vision a reality.
Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi highlighted that the new facilities will serve as dynamic hubs for learning, innovation, and experiential training. “They will foster collaboration and research using state-of-the-art tools to address real-world challenges. We congratulate Prof. Haque and Dr. Naqvi for their tireless efforts in securing these prestigious projects,” he added.
Explaining the objectives of the EV Research Lab, Prof. Ahteshamul Haque noted that the project aims to (i) strengthen advanced research infrastructure in the EV domain, (ii) establish an operational EV charging station on the JMI campus to nurture hands-on R&D skills among students, and (iii) set up a skill development center aligned with NITI Aayog’s 2030 vision to build a competent national workforce.
Discussing the Cyber Security Lab, Dr. Shane Kazim Naqvi said the proposed facility aligns with the Government of India’s National Cyber Security Strategy, focusing on developing a technically proficient and skilled workforce capable of safeguarding critical digital assets.
Both investigators expressed their appreciation to Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi for their continued encouragement and institutional support throughout the proposal process.
