NEW DELHI: Heart disease continues to affect Indians at significantly younger ages compared to Western populations. To address this urgent health issue, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) hosted the 11th Annual Conference of the Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research – Delhi Chapter (ISAR–DCCON 2026) on October 10 at the university’s Faculty of Engineering & Technology Auditorium.
Organized by JMI’s DDU KAUSHAL Kendra and ISAR Delhi Chapter, the day-long event centered around the theme “Bridging the Gap: From Molecular Mechanisms to Precision Management of Atherosclerosis.” Over 400 clinicians, researchers, and students gathered to discuss how lab discoveries can translate into personalized treatments for atherosclerosis—the plaque buildup in arteries that leads to heart attacks and strokes.
Key Highlights & Expert Insights:
- Lifetime Achievement: Dr. Rajendra K. Tangirala (Karolinska Institutet, Sweden) was honored for 30 years of pioneering research into how cholesterol, oxidative stress, and inflammation drive plaque accumulation.
- Precision Cardiology: Prof. Rajiv Narang (AIIMS New Delhi) highlighted how modern heart treatments now rely on intra-arterial imaging and pressure measurements to determine exact stenting needs alongside tailored cholesterol therapies.
- India-Specific Findings: Dr. Shantanu Sengupta (CSIR IGIB) shared insights from the 10,000-person Phenome India study, revealing unique connections between Vitamin B12 levels and cholesterol profiles across genders.
- Early Prevention: Prof. Harmeet Singh Rehan (LHMC) emphasized that lipid disorders in Indians require localized, India-specific treatment strategies, while Prof. Shridhar Dwivedi (National Heart Institute) stressed starting heart health prevention as early as maternal care during pregnancy.
The event also featured a Young Investigators’ Forum, showcasing 70 oral and poster presentations from emerging scientists, as well as guidance from the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) on national research grants.
