NEW DELHI: In a proactive move toward sustainable urban management, the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Sh. Sanjeev Khirwar, conducted a high-level on-ground inspection of the Okhla landfill site today.
Accompanied by senior MCD officials, the Commissioner’s visit underscores the city’s intensifying efforts to tackle legacy waste and modernize its garbage disposal infrastructure.
Strategic Review at Tehkhand-Okhla WTE Plant
Following the site inspection, Commissioner Khirwar chaired a comprehensive review meeting at the Tehkhand–Okhla Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Plant. The discussions focused on three critical pillars of waste management:
- Operational Streamlining: Identifying bottlenecks in current daily operations to ensure a faster flow of waste processing.
- Scientific Mechanisms: Strengthening the technical processes used to convert waste into energy, reducing the environmental footprint of the landfill.
- Progress Assessment: Evaluating current timelines for waste remediation to ensure targets for a “Garbage-Free Delhi” are met.
Commitment to a Cleaner Delhi
The MCD has reiterated its commitment to shifting away from traditional dumping toward scientific landfill management. By optimizing the Tehkhand–Okhla WTE facility, the corporation aims to increase the volume of waste diverted from the landfill and converted into useful grid power.
“MCD remains firmly committed to sustainable landfill management and delivering cleaner, more reliable civic services for the residents of Delhi,” the corporation stated in an official release.
This inspection comes at a crucial time as Delhi seeks to integrate more robust, technology-driven solutions to manage its daily waste output and clear existing mounds at legacy sites.
