NEW DELHI (Dr. Atharuddin Munne Bharti): A major crisis was narrowly avoided at Pacific Mall in Jasola on Saturday afternoon after a fire broke out in a section of the building currently under renovation. The prompt intervention of the Delhi Police and Delhi Fire Services ensured the situation was neutralized before it could escalate into a significant tragedy.
Emergency Response and Containment
At approximately 12:20 PM, emergency dispatchers at the Sarita Vihar Police Station received a PCR call reporting smoke and flames emanating from the mall premises. In a demonstration of tactical efficiency, first responders and fire tenders reached the site within minutes.
By the time the teams arrived, smoke had begun to billow from the upper levels, but the fire was successfully contained and extinguished shortly thereafter.
Investigative Findings: A Lack of Safety Precaution?
Preliminary inquiries conducted by local authorities suggest the fire was accidental but preventable. The blaze originated in an office space on the sixth floor, which is currently a restricted construction zone.
According to police sources, the fire was triggered by sparks from welding equipment being used to repair office furniture. The sparks landed on highly flammable thermocol sheets stored nearby, leading to a localized blaze and a heavy volume of thick smoke.
Casualties and Damage Assessment
Despite the initial alarm among mall-goers, officials have confirmed the following:
- Zero Casualties: No injuries or smoke inhalation cases were reported among the public or the construction crew.
- Minimal Property Impact: Damage was described as “negligible” and was strictly confined to construction materials and the immediate renovation site.
Authorities Issue Stern Advisory
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with indoor construction in high-traffic commercial spaces. The Delhi Police have issued a formal advisory, reminding property managers and contractors that fire safety protocols are not optional.
“Commercial establishments must ensure that flammable materials are properly stored and that fire suppression measures are active, especially during high-risk activities like welding,” a senior official stated.
The mall remains operational, though the sixth-floor renovation site is expected to undergo a safety audit before work resumes.
