New Delhi, 23 September 2025: The University Cultural Committee, Office of the Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW), Jamia Millia Islamia, in collaboration with the Medanta Foundation, organized a successful interactive workshop on Breast Health Awareness and Self-Breast Examination (SBE) under the national campaign “Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan.” The workshop, titled “Aao Jaano Seekho,” aimed at equipping young women with vital knowledge and hands-on skills for the early detection of breast cancer.
Highlighting the urgency of awareness, experts referred to the GLOBOCAN 2022 report, which recorded nearly 1.92 lakh new breast cancer cases in India, with an age-standardised incidence rate of 26.6 per 100,000 women. The discussion underscored the pressing need for preventive healthcare, timely self-check practices, and a collective approach to combating cancer stigma.
The event was held under the guidance of Prof. Neelofer Afzal, Dean Students’ Welfare. In her inaugural address, Prof. Afzal spoke about the importance of building a preventive healthcare culture through community participation. This was followed by the felicitation of Ms. Kausar Kidwai, CSR Head & AVP, Medanta Group, and Dr. Neeti Yadav, Senior Medical Officer, Breast & Onco-Surgery, by the Dean.
Led by a trained team from the Medanta Foundation, the sessions featured expert talks and interactive demonstrations, including the use of medical simulators to help participants practice Self-Breast Examination techniques. The hands-on component proved highly impactful, as participants gained confidence in recognizing simulated abnormalities.
The workshop was conducted in two sessions — a forenoon session at 10:00 AM and an afternoon session at 2:00 PM — and drew enthusiastic participation from over 250 female students and staff members. Both sessions concluded with an engaging Q&A round, enabling participants to clarify doubts and strengthen their understanding of breast health.
The program concluded with a collective pledge, where participants committed to performing monthly self-breast examinations, encouraging peers and family members to adopt the same practice, and spreading awareness about the life-saving value of early detection.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Dr. Adila Parveen, Assistant Dean Students’ Welfare, expressed appreciation to the Medanta Foundation team, distinguished guests, and participants for making the awareness drive a meaningful success.
Through this initiative, Jamia Millia Islamia reaffirmed its commitment to preventive healthcare, breaking taboos, and empowering women towards healthier and stronger communities.
