New Delhi, September 9, 2025: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) commemorated International Literacy Day by participating in an international virtual program organized by the ASEM LLL Hub Regional Centre for South Asia on September 8, titled “Achieving Digital Literacy…Will access solve the problem?” Experts from India, Germany, and Denmark discussed the challenges of digital literacy across diverse economic contexts.
Prof. Shikha Kapur from JMI’s Department of Adult and Continuing Education Extension highlighted access as the major barrier to digital literacy in India, especially for women, rural populations, and marginalized groups. She emphasized that basic literacy is essential to bridging India’s digital divide.
Dr. Jan Schiller of Helmut Schmidt University, Germany, noted that while access issues have largely been resolved in Europe, challenges remain in the quality of digital skills imparted. He also pointed to the lack of user-friendly digital processes excluding many users.
Dr. Shalini Singh from Denmark discussed how rapid digitalization marginalizes the elderly and low-skilled due to the “Matthew Effect,” where digitally skilled individuals gain more benefits, while others lag behind. She also observed that digital technology is often used more for entertainment than educational purposes.
The program saw participation from global academics and students, underscoring that despite India’s extensive policies and resources, literacy rates and standards remain low. The ASEM LLL Hub, comprising 51 countries from Asia and Europe, promotes lifelong learning across regions.
The event concluded with a message from ASEM LLL Hub Chair Prof. Séamus O’Tuama, urging inclusive digital education to support all learners.
